A cow killer in calm water
November 18, 2019
These Danny lures are great. On a slow retrieve in calm water they have excellent action. They come equipped with excellent hooks. Don't mess with the angle of the lip, but you can turn the eyelet up for it to swim deeper or down for it to swim higher in the water.
ProsExcellent action, great hardware.
ConsDoesn't cast very far, not good in rough water

Stike triggering action
December 16, 2017
A slow retrieve will enhance the wobble produced from this plug as it seems to pivot from its center. A little quicker retrieve will see this baby dive down and call up the big ones!
ProsGreat action, well made
ConsNot for making long casts

Great swimming lure that consistently entices fish to chomp it. Double treble hooks usually seals the deal.

Can't Wait for Striper Season
January 25, 2017
These are the original Danny Plugs. Learn to fish them and you will do great. The folks t TackleDirect couldn't be nicer. Best Prices and great personal service.
ProsA Striper-Killer. Easy to fish. Not as long caster as some of the plastic versions
ConsNot as long caster as some of the plastic versions

Best swimming metal lip I own. casts good and produces fish. Its the bigger of Gibbs swimmers. I love it.
Gibbs Dannys
March 12, 2016
I've fished both large and small Dannys, Pro Series and Standard models. Sizes are appropriate for prevailing forage / bait. Pro Series comes with eyes and upgraded hard-ware for the added price. Standard models benefit from beefing up the hooks - split rings may help but be careful of making hook attachment so long that they foul each other or hang up on lure top or lip. Three hooks is more than I like to fish with as it damages fish more than you need to and can be painful / dangerous at night or near deep moving water. Removing a treble or replacing the tail hook with a hook-less flag has not reduced my hook-ups or landings at all. Like many metal-lips they don't cast well but often, especially at night or in white water you don't need a whole lot of distance to get to the fish. Gibbs Dannys have worked for me well on calm nights, slowing swam on the surface, leaving a big V wake - likewise at sunrise but also do well thrown in the white-water after a wave set breaks and bass are darting in to feed in the wash. They can be tuned to swim on top or slightly sub-surface by bending the line tie / eye up or down (opposite of where you want it to swim) but don't mess with the lip unless you really know what you're doing, once you wreck the action it's hard to get back.
Prosslow retrieve, big V wake big profile for big bait and to cull larger bass fish catching ability simple proven colors
Conspoor casting hard-ware and finish on standard models leaves something to be desired price of pro-Series, even though they address the short-comings of the standard models

Danny swimmers
November 21, 2015
Gibbs Danny swimmer is my all time favorite Striped Bass lure. In my 35 years of fishing for stripers I have caught more 25lb plus on this lure than any other. I have had success with all colors . If you want to catch a trophy striper on a plug look no further...Danny gets the job done!
ProsGreat action, slow retrive a must.
ConsLure does not cast as well as others especially into the wind.

Perfect size to cast from the surf or boat and it catches tons of stripers and blues when they are chasing bigger bait.

Classic lure
December 24, 2014
Obviously this is a classic and with good reason. The swimming action is very nice. The lure is surprisingly light for its size, so it doesn't cast as well as other, more dense lures (eg. Pencil popper). Still, well worth the space in your surf bag. As someone else said, the draw back is that blue fish chew up the lure a bit.

Love this Lure!
October 19, 2014
Was recently turned on to this lure, and boy do I love it! in one outing this Spring I was out catching other surf fisherman nearby by 2 or 3 times!! Only issue I have is that over time the bluefish beat it up with their sharp teeth, but they still keep hitting it, so whatever. I find the 2 1/4" size to have the best action vs. the 3 1/2" or 1 1/2", not sure why.

Metal lip swimmer

Fish Slayers
September 9, 2014
One of my favorite Danny type swimmers and the first Danny I started learning how to fish with. They ride on the surface with a great side to side sweeping motion leaving a big wake behind them and with little to no roll. Best suited for calm and moderate conditions, but still swims pretty well in rougher surf. I also like to change out the hooks and swivels because they tend to rust pretty quickly, at least the ones made before Gibbs changed to the new hardware in 2014.

Great top water action
March 11, 2014
This plug works great in rocky areas crawling on the surface of the water with a great side to side action. Although I haven't caught a ton of fish on this plug when it does catch the fish are not small. Casting distance is the worst attribute of this plug.
ProsCatches big fish
ConsCasting distance

Personal Favorite

Gibbs Dannys in yellow are my favorite plugs for boat plugging. Bass can't refuse them. I prefer the 3.5 oz. A slow retrieve making sure the tail whips back and forth is the key.

My favorite swimmer
October 17, 2012
I have this in 4.5 and 6 inches, both yellow. I think the smaller ones cast better but the larger one has a better swimming action. Love watching this thing swim in and seeing a bass nail it.No question the only to water swimmer you should be using
ProsGreat action
ConsHard to cast far
