Good Medium Setup for Surf Fishing
February 20, 2021
Bought the 2 piece 7' 6" model for surf fishing in South East Florida. Held up to multiple Jack Crevalle. The textured grip above the reel seat was useful to gain leverage while fighting the fish. Guide inserts were good quality, there were no cracks and they didn't pop out unexpectedly. However, I felt the guide frames could be reinforced better, such as adding a third brace on the other side, like the largest guide near the reel seat.

Great Surf Fishing rod!
September 9, 2020
I have a 8' 1 piece Star Stellar surf rod that I use for primarily Albie and Bonito from the surf. I also well as some back bay fishing. This surf rod does not disappoint it has good back bone and is very comfortable to fish with. The rod is light weight and allows for hours of fishing with little to no fatigue. Pick one up you will not be disappointed.
ProsLight weight, powerful, good components, cork grip tape great Value for the price.

Tough Rods That Get The Job Done!
September 26, 2019
I cannot say anything bad about these rods. I bought 3 1 piece rods, 2 x 7'6 and one 8'. They are incredible. The 8' is my favorite for casting 2 oz kastmaster style spoons. They cast far. I have them all paired with Slammer III's. Perfect match for the surf and jetties, tanks. I've had them a while now and they take a beating and the guide rigs stay on. I'm so glad I upgraded to these from chain store cheapies.

So I don't know how it handles any size fish just yet because I'm the only guy in NJ that didn't go on the recent bite as of late. Soon tho, if it's anything like other Star products it's wonderful. I've never had any problems with their rods.

Great for the money
November 23, 2018
The SG76IS is great for fishing back bays with smaller lures and can handle days in the surf when it’s not too rough. It’s rated to two ounces but I wouldn’t think to throw that much on it.
ProsAffordable and looks high quality
ConsA little over rated as far as lures go

Nice light surf rod.
November 8, 2018
I was looking for a replacement of an old light action shorter (71/2 ft.) surf rod that I've had since the 70's! It took a while to find, but the star stellar lite fit the bill perfectly! I haven't used it yet, but I'm sure it will be great. I can't wait to try it out hopefully this spring in Florida casting jigs for pompano in the surf. The rod it's self has great components and is well built. Well worth the money!

Favorite 2 piece surf rod
October 10, 2018
I love this rod. Short butt length. Big guides, none of that silly micro stuff. Can throw 3/8-1.5oz. I use this rod to throw small bucktails, sp minnows and plastics in the NJ surf. Super fun to fish and handles keeper stripers without trouble. It is on the moderate-fast side, don't expect a very fast rod. It allows you to make far casts without much effort. It is just right for smaller presentations and I am super picky about rods.
Prosshort butt 2 piece stripper guide on the bottom half super light weight with plenty of backbone big guides allow knots with heavy leaders to pass freely

Excellent 2 piece 8 foot surf rod for NJ
October 10, 2018
The rod is a little under rated as it is pretty stiff. I would say sweet spot is towards the upper range. I would rate it at 3/4-3oz. It is a very light rod with big guides and short butt length compared to other brands. In my opinion there is no point of owning a 8 foot rod with 20" butt length like st croix seems to like to do. This one is about 13". I really like that the stripper guide is on the bottom half of the rod. The guides are big and few and allow any kind of knot with heavy leader to pass through without getting destroyed. For the money I don't think you can do better for a 2 piece 8 foot rod and I have tried many.

Great rod
October 3, 2018
I couldn't be more happier with this rod at this price point. I've had more expensive, more popular name brands break on me. This rod does the job and it's reasonably priced. I have caught hundreds of striped bass on this rod with no issues. I can't say the same about the more expensive rods because they have all broken on me. I am a Star fan for sure.
ProsThe price and it has held up on countless fish. Thank you Star.
ConsNot much considering the price point.

I like this rod, its light, smooth casting, has good bend on the top half and strong backbone on the bottom
Proseverything said above
Consthe reason I bought this rod is because the handle length is short, in the description it listed at 19 inches, but mine is 22 1/2 from the bottom of reel seat to the butt, either tackledirect list it wrong or I have the older model

Disappointing
May 3, 2017
A friend recommended this rod as a good affordable light rid for stripers. It was really nice for an hour or so...throwing light lures really well. Then it broke while retrieving a lure with seaweed on it. Tackledirect is standing behind it but it's disappointing.

9' Star Stellar Surf Rod
January 26, 2017
Rod was a Christmas gift from my daughter. She knows my tackle preferences. Rod is on par with rods I normally use, Daiwa and Lamiglas. Rod is very well made with a nice parabolic action and "feel". I'm looking forward to fishing with it soon.

Perfect bucktail & sp minnor rod
November 9, 2016
This is a perfect size and action for bucktails and sp minnows from the surf. I am extremely picky with my rods and this one is THE ONE. I have bought, tried and sold a tica dolphin 8-9, triumph 8-9, star stellar surf 8mh-9, lamiglass insane 9, airwave 7-9, st croix mojo 7-9. I went through a lot of rods and this rod beats them all. Pair it with a 4000-5000 reel and you have a perfect surf combo for 1/2-2oz lures.
Prosone piece strong guides larger guides perfect for braid to leader knots light real moderate action short butt length

This rod is so light weight but it has some serious backbone. It casts like a dream and makes lure fishing off the beach a lot more pleasurable. The fact that this is a one piece rod versus the typical two piece makes me like it even more. Great purchase at a great price.

Star Surf Rod (a Great Backup Rod)
September 25, 2015
I purchased this rod as a backup to my primary surf rods. (St.Croix Mojo Stick) Ive seen many rods break in the heat of a bass or blue fish blitz so it is just an inexpensive insurance to keep fishing. Plus it is two piece and it stores quite well. Nice stick for the money. The wrap and handle reel seat are top rate rod looks more expensive than it is. Quite satisfied run a Van Staal 150 on it with 30 braid chucks bucktails to 2.5 oz and plugs nicely. Good starter rod for first time surf fisherman.

Great all around rod from Specks to King Mackerel.
March 6, 2015
Great rod, very light weight but can cast a mile. Love the weight of the lure vs size of the rod ratio. Paired mine with a Penn Battle 4000 with 15 lb. 300 yds braid and I've caught speckled trout from my kayak to king mackerel fishing throwing x-raps on the pier. Highly suggest the surf model for inshore or offshore light tackle fishing.
ProsLightweight, flexible, good backbone, quality parts including the cork wrapping, reel seat and guides. And great price.
ConsNo hook keeper.

May 12, 2014
took it out this weekend and hooked on to some 5 to 6 foot black tip sharks on the pier. Had a Penn reel with 30 lbs braid on it. Very strong rod, lots of back bone but not to heavy. I really enjoyed fishing with it.
