Great reel for the money

Love this reel. I now have 2 of them. Very versatile. From bottom fishing to trolling it can do it all.
ProsSmooth drag, well made,
ConsCould use more drag, needs better reel handle.
Best value in offshore reels?
August 9, 2022
As others have said, this may be the best "bang for your buck" reel if you're looking to get into offshore fishing, especially for those of us who don't really have true "offshore" boats. We use the 25s for trolling lures, I have caught basically everything, including sailfish, mahi and my PB wahoo (about 60lb). 20s are good too if you dont need as much line capacity. I use the 15s for livebait mackerel fishing on 20lb mono as well. I would be willing to spend a few more bucks if they came with nicer / bigger handles
ProsSimplicity, durability, smoothness
ConsThe handles should be better

Great Reels for the Price
January 22, 2022
Fantastic reel for the price. Have used mine for bottom fishing and a little light trolling. I could see the handle being a little uncomfortable if battling a good-sized fish, but for everything I've caught so far it has been fine. Honestly, you can't ask for much more on a reel at this pricepoint.

Best Reel for light trolling
June 5, 2021
This reel is very versatile but it's niche is light trolling. This reel will catch wahoo, small sail fish, school size yft and can even be used for grouper and snapper though here a lot will depend on the angler's skill when the fish strikes.
ProsLight, idiot proof to use
ConsThe knod could be better

Great reel
March 19, 2021
After a hard debate on which reels to buy I’m happy I went with 4x TLD-25s! Was able to get 525 yds on these but probably could’ve gotten 600+ if the shop (not TD!) had done what I’d asked. Nonetheless very happy with the purchase!
ProsGreat braid + top shot capacity
ConsThe handle is a little short but that?s all fixable.

Love the TLD line
November 19, 2019
The TLD line is an amazing entry level reel that will be there for years even on charter boats I've seen, my only downside to this one is the knob. If they just made all their TLD lines with a football or round knob these reels would take over the entry level field

Great surf reel
October 29, 2019
I bought it to put on a 20~40 1954 12' Yellow Fenwick. I restored the rod all new guides and rewrapped it & I knew I wanted this reel for the rod. I've used TLD reels since the 90's great for casting, trolling and jigging. . I can use it on my surf rod or troll for kingfish & Dolphin in my kayak in the Gulf.

Best bang for your buck
October 23, 2019
I personally love the TLD series reels. If you’re on a budget, and looking for a quality reel, this is definitely it. I have a tld 20 and 30 and absolutely love them. I’m honestly thinking about adding more to my arsenal for the 2020 season. If you’re beginning to fish for big game fish, the Shimano TLD reels are where it’s at!!

Another classic and great reel from Shimano
December 16, 2018
I have 2, one is at least 10 years old, of these and a 25 and they are really great reels. They guy who cleans and services my reels in the off season, joking, said he doesn't service TLDs because they are too well built! We've never had an issue with any of them, even the one that's at least 10 years old. There's a reason everyone I spoke with about a trolling reel said to get a TLD.
ProsBest bang for the buck reel out there.

Good bang for the buck
July 26, 2018
These reels are a workhorse on our boat. They are the ones I give the novices so I don’t have to worry about them getting messed up. They handle the abuse. I’ve has them for 5+ years only disassembled once for a full cleaning and maintenance.
ProsGreat reels for the price and can handle abuse and neglect without issue.
ConsThe retrieval handle could be improved but is solid.

Added 2 of these for off shore trolling in NC. Great for spanish, king, mahi and reef fish like grouper and Amberjack. Smooth drag, decent line retrive. Will be adding more as my squidders wear out.

The standard for saltwater reels
January 12, 2016
When I started getting into the bigger fish and heavier duty fishing equipment I started searching for what reels to get. There's no other reel that's recommended more than the TLD25. For a fraction of the price of the high end reels you can catch pretty much anything in the ocean (realistically) with this reel. After starting with 1 to try it out I ended up buying 3 more to round out my trolling spread. The only thing I would say that could be improved is the handle. I've see several people who have upgraded to a larger handle that swear it makes it a much better reel.
Pros-Entry Level Priced -Rugged and sturdy -Large line capacity
Cons-Handle is a bit small

Awsome for Kings and Cobia from the pier
November 19, 2015
If you ever walk to the end of a pier in NC and look at all the pin rig fishermen, 80% of them will be using this reel. I being one of them. It has proven reliability and durability when sitting in harsh saltwater environments for 15+ hours a day. The clicker is nice and loud and the drag is smooth. I've decked numerous kings and cobia. When that cobia gets up close and you need to lock her down this reel does the job.

Great For Kings and Cobia
September 30, 2015
I use this on a stand up rod on my pin rig. Has plenty of line capacity to let the kings run and the drag to fight cobia hard.

Favorite Bottom Fishing Reel
June 9, 2015
Overall a great reel if you like to bottom fish; solid stopping drag and excellent ability to adjust drag.
ProsHolds up to saltwater very well and overall just a great reel.
ConsA higher speed retrieve would be nice when you hit depths of 180 or more. They make a two speed but its much more expensive.

Very Satisfied
March 17, 2015
I first used these reels on a friend's boat and was impressed with how one handled a foul hooked White Marlin. I figured I couldn't go wrong buying a pair to use for inshore Striped Bass trolling. They are smooth, rugged, have an excellent drag system and are priced right.

Use for Tuna and Mahi Trolling
January 25, 2015
Good reel. Added three more to my arsenal. Pair it with a 6ft 30 class standup trolling rod for a nice outfit.
ConsThe reel seat should have a tie down eye so I can clip on my rod saver strap while trolling. I don't understand why Shimano does this for the Tallus but not the TLD. The extra cost would be negligible.

Good if you keep it clean
December 22, 2014
I have had this reel for awhile now and like it alot. However, having it for awhile, the sun does take a beating on the graphite. You can tell that the color has faded quite a bit and the drag had also started to get a little sticky. We use this reel for everything from stripers to trolling with the bird for tuna and mahi. It is paried up with a Heavy ugly stik and is a pretty nice combo.
ProsStrong smooth if taken care of holds tons of line
Conscolor fade sticky drag from salt

Great Reel, Smooth Drag, Very Lightweight
January 16, 2013
I purchased 2 of these TLD-20's to put on a pair of Penn Mariner Standup rods (630CMST) that I had recently purchased. I plan to utilize these combos for pulling deep-diving plugs (Rapala X-Rap Magnums, Bomber CDs, MirrOlure 111MRs, etc.). The reels matched up perfectly with the rods, and I can't wait to get the line spooled on them (150 yds of Rapala 50 lb Titanium Stretch braid over 250 yds of 40 lb Yo-Zuri hybrid fluoro-mono line. I'm very pleased with the reels so far,and one of the reasons I purchased these reels is their reputation for long and satisfactory service.
ProsSmooth Drag Very Lightweight Great Reputation
ConsI wish they would modernize the handles, and maybe utilize something a little more like the "soft-grip" handles I have on my Avet reels.
